Overthinking and Depression, where one leads to another

If I say overthinking leads to depression, some readers might not agree. Throughout this article, I am going to put down some facts and my opinions regarding this topic.

Overthinking is not a medical condition. Perhaps it is a person’s thinking nature. The classic definition of overthinking is to think about something too much or for too long. It is human nature to think things through when evaluating a situation or making a decision. But it becomes overthinking when you can’t get out of your head. It is way more harmful than helpful.

There are situations where overthinking can be helpful. For example, you have an interview tomorrow. At night, you tend to overthink the questions they can ask for the interview and you prepare more for the interview. In a way, it is helpful to you. But there are situations in your daily life where overthinking is not helpful at all. For example, you have a small cough. You tend to Google the problem. Google says you are suffering from tuberculosis. You make yourself believe that you have those symptoms. Not only this reduces your confidence, but it makes your body weak as well. So in a way, overthinking does become a key to depression.

Now let’s talk about depression. When you hear the word Depression, you might think that it’s just a silly condition about the human mind. Let me tell you something, it is not. Biologically speaking, depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and home.

Depression might make an individual down; bring up a feeling that the certain individual is worthless etc. If you think depression is the same as sadness, you are wrong. Sadness may lead to depression but they are not the same. An individual suffering from depression can have suicidal thoughts. It has certain risk factors such as Biochemistry, Genetics, and Personality. Overthinking can cause changes in your personality and that leads to depression. In all cases, overthinking is not the major reason for depression. So, my friends, stay positive and smile throughout!!!
