World’s most complex microparticle: A Synthetic which can outdo nature’s intricacy

A team led by the University of Michigan had produced synthetic microparticles which are more intricate than the most complicated ones found in nature. These particles are composed of twisted spikes which are arranged into a ball of few microns.

Nature had always been an inspiration to scientists. Similarly, an algae named Coccolithophore turned to be the source of inspiration for this expedition. These scientists used tools like artificial intelligence and machine learning in designing nanoparticles. By using flat nanoparticles they created spikes. However experimental results showed that UV energy was absorbed into the heart of the particles and thus transformed through quantum mechanical interactions and became circularly polarized visible light as it left through the curved spikes. Also Researchers believe that this invention would help scientists and engineers to improve biosensors and their efficiency in chemical reactions.
