Topic- ADULT NEUROGENESIS-The Potential of Neural Stem cells in the Adult Brain
The scientific community was taken aback with curiosity when they realized that the neural stem cells can exist in the adult brain!!! These specialised cells that are capable of making new neurons in the adult brain reside in selected locations of the brain and make specialised neurons throughout an adult lifespan. Why do we have stem cells in the brain and why is it limited to specific locations? Do the adult neural stem cells make up for lost, old or degenerated neurons? Do they have a function in normal brain physiology? Can these cells be harnessed for medical purpose?
